As you will no doubt have read before, the dry clean only label is more often than not, an insurance policy for the manufacturer. Nearly everything can be handwashed. As far as wool goes, handwash in tepid water. Lay the sweater flat on a towel and roll it up to get rid of excess water. To dry, lie it flat, out of direct sun. You can handwash cashmere in the same way, but if you are concerned leave it to a professional. A cotton garment will always say its OK to wash, but actually, it is better to have a cotton knit dry cleaned in order that is remains soft and retains its shape. Handwashing is best for perspiration removal in silk, but do check the care instructions. And synthetics should be handwashed in tepid water.
